DOE CSGF Practicum Information

Each DOE CSGF fellow is required to perform at least one 12-week practicum research assignment at a participating DOE Laboratory within the first 2 years of their fellowship. This exciting research opportunity is meant to be distinct from your thesis research and serve as a broadening experience.

Below you will find a map of the participating DOE Laboratory sites at which your practicum may be performed. If you do not see a lab listed that you are interested in, contact the DOE CSGF Coordinator for further information. Click on the sites on the map to link to information about each laboratory (practicum coordinator contact information, research examples, and abstracts of fellows' practicum research at that site).

Selecting and Processing Your Practicum

You may begin your quest to determine your practicum site at any time after you become a fellow. Here is a timeline to keep in mind when making your decision and processing your request:

JUNE:
The DOE CSGF Annual Meeting presents an excellent opportunity to network with DOE laboratory staff familiar with computational science research at their laboratories as well as current and past fellows who have already completed their practicum assignments.

OCTOBER:
Information about each fellow who is “available” for practicum is sent out to the practicum coordinators; you may be contacted after that time by representatives of laboratories who would like to host your practicum research.

JANUARY:
We ask that each fellow identify the practicum site they have chosen and the dates of their practicum research assignment (even if you will not be performing your practicum that following summer) on their renewal application due early January. This can be changed again before February, but should be your best estimate.

FEBRUARY:
Paperwork for the practicum is due by mid-February of the year you will be performing your practicum.

Processing the Practicum Request paperwork:

  1. To submit a Practicum Request, you must complete the “Insurance Information” and the “Practicum Information” links on your secure site. For a second practicum, please use the “Second Practicum Information” and “Second Practicum Evaluation” links.
  2. Print the forms after you have completed all the appropriate information online.
  3. Obtain signatures from your university coordinator and your faculty advisor.
  4. Mail the form to Krell for further processing and approval by February 15th.

MARCH – MAY:
Krell will notify you when your practicum is approved and inform you of your stipend during your practicum (you will be provided with a supplemental amount, unique to each laboratory, to offset your additional living costs while at the practicum site).

Meet with your thesis and practicum advisors to discuss the practicum project.

Gather housing information from all available sources. The DOE CSGF Program Coordinator will also provide you with housing information that has been compiled.

You can be reimbursed for the travel costs of one trip to your practicum site for detailed discussions with your advisor and/or to arrange housing before your practicum. Travel Guidelines for this visit can be found on your secure site.

If requested, the DOE CSGF program will make a $500 advance payment to you up to one month before the practicum to assist with your travel costs. Contact the DOE CSGF Program Coordinator to request an advance. The advance payment will be deducted from the stipend you receive one month after the end of your practicum.

Verify that your medical insurance will provide adequate coverage while you are on practicum.

MAY – SEPTEMBER:
Most practica take place during these summer months. However, you may schedule a practicum at any time that is convenient, and is approved by your university and the practicum site.

Download the Practicum Relocation Guidelines and the Travel Reimbursement form from your secure site. Make sure you save all of your original receipts and be specific about the time you left and arrived at the laboratory on your travel expense voucher.

JULY – SEPTEMBER:
Your travel costs to and from the practicum site will be reimbursed upon presentation of appropriate documentation. You may request reimbursement after each trip, or after both trips are complete.

After your practicum, you are required to provide an evaluation of the practicum experience. Log into your secure site to submit your online evaluation.

If you represent a DOE Laboratory interested in participating in the DOE CSGF program that is not listed above as an approved Practicum site, please let us know using the contact information listed below.
